LED Screen Size Guide: How Big a Screen Do You Need?
A practical guide to sizing an LED screen for your event in Raipur — pixel pitch, viewing distance, indoor vs outdoor, and a quick guide by guest count.
Why it matters
The size question most people ask backwards
Most people start by asking for a screen size in feet. The better starting question is: how far away is your furthest viewer, and how close will your nearest viewer sit? Screen size follows from that, not the other way round. Get it wrong and you either overspend on resolution nobody at the back can use, or undersize a screen that looks blocky from the front row.
The two numbers
Pixel pitch and viewing distance, explained simply
Pixel pitch is the distance between one LED and the next, in millimetres. A smaller number means a sharper image up close; a larger number is fine — and usually cheaper — once viewers are standing further back.
There’s no single official formula for how far back a screen needs to be viewed from, and different AV industry guides land on different rules of thumb — commonly somewhere between 3 and 8 feet of comfortable viewing distance for every 1mm of pixel pitch, depending on the content and how critical sharpness is. A 2.5mm screen, for instance, is usually comfortable from roughly 8-20 feet back. Other guides tie pixel pitch more directly to distance bands: fine pitches (around 1.2-2.6mm) for close indoor viewing at 5-10 feet, and coarser pitches (2.6mm and up) once viewers are 10 feet or further away.
The honest takeaway: treat any formula as a starting estimate, not a guarantee. Content type, how critical sharpness is, and your actual venue layout all matter more than the number alone — which is why we offer a free site visit before you commit to a size.
Quick guide
A rough starting point by event size
General ranges, not promises — your room shape, stage height and content will shift these. Use them to start the conversation, then confirm with a site visit.
Up to ~30 guests
Boardroom or small meeting
- Finer pixel pitch (close viewing, roughly 1.2-1.9mm)
- Compact screen, roughly 6-10 ft wide
- Almost always indoor
50-200 guests
Product launch or conference
- Mid pixel pitch, roughly 1.9-2.6mm
- Screen roughly 10-16 ft wide
- Usually indoor, occasionally a covered outdoor stage
200+ guests
Wedding stage or large outdoor event
- Coarser pixel pitch, 2.6mm and up outdoors
- Screen 16 ft wide and up
- Outdoor screens also need higher brightness to stay visible in daylight
Indoor vs outdoor
The same screen rarely works both places
Indoor screens can use a finer pixel pitch because lighting is controlled and viewers often sit closer — that’s what gives a sharper, more detailed image for presentations and branded content. Outdoor screens need a coarser pitch and significantly higher brightness, since they’re competing with direct sunlight rather than ambient room light. Mounting also differs: outdoor rigs need weatherproofing and secure anchoring that indoor stage screens don’t.
Avoid these
Common sizing mistakes
- Sizing for the front row only, and forgetting the back of the room can’t read small text or fine details
- Picking an indoor-spec screen for an outdoor slot without accounting for daylight brightness
- Not checking the screen’s aspect ratio against the actual stage or wall space before booking
- Choosing pixel pitch by budget alone, without checking it against your nearest viewer’s distance
FAQ
Questions about LED screen sizing
What size LED screen do I need for 200 guests?
As a rough starting point, a screen roughly 10-16 ft wide with a 1.9-2.6mm pixel pitch suits most indoor events of that size, but the right answer depends on your room’s depth and shape. Share your venue details and we’ll confirm the right size on a free site visit.
What’s pixel pitch, in plain terms?
It’s the distance between one LED and the next, measured in millimetres. Smaller numbers pack LEDs closer together for a sharper image up close; larger numbers are fine, and more affordable, once viewers are further back.
Can I rent a smaller screen and upsize later if needed?
Yes — for one-off events, renting lets you match the screen to that specific event without committing to a size. See our LED screen rental page for availability.
Do you offer a site visit to help pick the right size?
Yes, a free site visit is part of how we scope every LED project — we measure the actual venue and viewing distances rather than size a screen from guesswork. See our LED services overview to get started.
